The PX 2700, also known as the Octopus, came as standard with 1 external line and 2 handsets; this could be expanded to 3 external lines and 6 handsets. To my knowledge, it was the first telephone exchange that customers were allowed to install themselves. The exchange had a few basic functions and could be expanded with two function cards. In this example, the ‘Business’ and ‘Music on Hold’ cards. There was also a module that allowed a message to be played when an incoming call was received, as well as a Senior module; at the press of a button, a pre-programmed number could be dialled. The person being called would then hear a few tones and know that the call was coming via the Senior module.
